The App is one of the best features of this product, and we found the App to be very intuitive, interactive, and user friendly. We have had many “smart” gadgets here at BBQ Grill Academy, and many of those products fail to deliver good and easy to set up apps. You can also name your cooks, which will be stored for future reference if you have a recipe you cook on multiple occasions. While you are cooking, the App shows you the elapsed and remaining cook times. The remaining time calculator estimates cook time based on ambient and target meat temperatures. This lets you know how long it will take for your meat to reach the target temperature. If you could look at a grill grate under a microscope, you would see pores and a rough, pitted surface. While with some “cabled probe” wireless thermometers, you need to clamp an ambient thermometer to the grill’s grate and then the probe into the meat. I set my oven to 350°F and let it heat up. I then set up a cook for pulled pork on the smoker using the preset cook settings stored in the App. The internal sensor can only measure temperatures up to 212°f. In contrast, the ambient temperature sensor can handle temps up to 576°f, making it perfect for measuring the temp of your oven or smoker.It read 92% of the target ambient temperature a half hour into the cook and 98% of of the cook 30 minutes after that. You’ll monitor your progress from the app. Your “Now Cooking” screen provides real-time updates of the ambient temperature in my oven, the internal temperature of the bird, elapsed time, and estimated time to reach the target temperature! In the alerts menu, you get two options: a pre-alert and a ready alert. The pre-alert lets you set an alert at whatever temperature you want before reaching your final temperature. I could have set my phone near the oven and kept an eye on things from there. But, I couldn’t imagine giving up the use of my phone for an hour or so. In our opinion, this is too much work and kind of defeats the purpose of grilling. We’d never do this, but it wouldn’t be a complete article without at least giving this technique a mention. Start mixing it gently but be careful to not get too aggressive as you do not want your cheese to turn into mush.
