In rehearsal, Haynes, Blanchett and Mara realized that certain lines should be cut, which Haynes deemed the "stylistic practice that we all took throughout the creative departments. I feel there was an understanding with them that words and dialogue were never carrying the weight of the story." [36] Costume designer Sandy Powell said of working with Haynes, "Todd is super visual, super prepared and he provides his own visuals at the beginning of the film. He starts with a look book of images that he's compiled over the months and months. He's almost OCD about it. In a good way." [62] The film's look was influenced by the postwar color photography of Ruth Orkin, Esther Bubley, Helen Levitt, and Vivian Maier, as well as the abstract photography of Saul Leiter. Haynes used their work as a visual reference for depicting a "dirty and sagging" New York. [32] [63] [64]

" 'Carol' starring on-screen lesbian lovers Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara praised at Cannes". New York Daily News. Archived from the original on August 3, 2020 . Retrieved February 14, 2021. Carol is the love story of two women who come together despite both being in relationships with men. Needless to say, since they already have partners (whom they are not satisfied with), and since this movie is set in the 1950’s, the two women face much discrimination and challenges. Personally, although the acting was excellent and the story fascinating, I give it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because the plot wasn’t as captivating as I would have liked. Parents should be warned that during a sex scene, a woman’s bare breasts are shown, however the rest of the movie is very tame, save some brief language and violence that is not concerning in my opinion. It is a fairly slow but well-executed movie that depicts the delicate love and relationships of two strong women in a time where lesbian women faced many challenges.
