Mr. Morales tried to quiet them down. He explained that I was a guest for the weekend and they had to treat me with respect. Mrs. Brisbane looked surprised. She reached over and patted Sayeh's arm. "I won't send a note now ... if you'll promise to try." Betty G. Humphrey's matter-of-fact, table-level view of the world is alternately silly and profound and Birney captures his unique blend of innocence and earnestness from the start. TIP FOUR: Never, ever squeeze, pinch or crush a hamster. If it runs away, squeals or mutters, leave the hamster alone. While I didn't feel like anything groundbreaking was done with this book, I feel glad it exists---wholesome, relatable, AGE-APPROPRIATE fiction in the midst of all of the sarcastic, snarky, and rough books popular today.Through this first-person narrative from the perspective of a classroom pet, young readers will see that first impressions are not always accurate; that people are multifaceted, and you can't really understand a person until you see all aspects of his/her life; that sometimes, when people have problems, it takes an outsider - like Humphrey! - to open their eyes to a solution. Mrs. Brisbane was sure hard to figure out. She hadn'tbeen mean to Sayeh at all. She just did what a teacher is supposed to do.
