Description

Rinse in hot water first, then cool water until it runs clear. Wash with a bit of hand soap to be sure all of the dye and fixative have been removed.

Fill a stainless steel or enamel pot with just enough warm water for the fabric to move freely. Turn heat on medium. Remove fabric from water. For cotton, linen and rayon dissolve one cup (237 ml) of salt in a little hot water and add to dye bath. For silk and wool add a third of a cup (78 ml) of white vinegar instead of salt. Avoid pouring directly onto fabric.

Turn the heat off, cover your dye pot, and leave it undisturbed overnight, for 12 to 24 hours. At this stage, it will be a moderate to dark brown. If it seems light, you can repeat the process with more walnut hulls. Add pre-wetted garments or fabric and bring to a rolling boil. Maintain temperature and stir frequently for ½ to 1 hour. For uniform colour, use constant agitation. PRODUCTS CARRIED: Film Marker, Gum Arabic, Pearl Ex Powdered Pigments, Pearl Ex 32-Color Set, Piñata Alcohol Ink Finally, I’d recommend at least one run through your washing machine alone (without anything you’re worried about staining) to be sure all the dye has washed out.

To finish, allow the jeans to run through an entire regular hot wash with detergent – then dry and you’re done! Mordant for plant fibers, a note: Generally, plant fibers are mordanted with a tannin followed by the dyestuff, but our walnut husks are already extremely tannin-rich, so we’re essentially mordanting and dyeing all at once! Extend the dyeing time by resetting the wash cycle before the rinse cycle begins. The longer the dyeing time, the darker the colour and better the fixation. We recommend 50 to 60 minutes of dyeing time.

Do two separate dyebaths, one with salt and one with vinegar. This will probably be best for darkest colours. Set your machine for the hottest possible water temperature and longest possible wash cycle. If you are able to extend the wash cycle, do so. The longer you are able to allow the fabric to remain in the wash/dye cycle the darker the colour and the better the fixation.

Wash your jeans thoroughly in pH neutral washing liquid, paying special attention to stains. Even if your jeans are new, they should be washed to remove sizing or other finish chemicals from the fabric. You don’t need to dry them after this wash – they can go straight to the mordanting phase.

Add 1 cup (237 ml) of fabric salt for cotton, linen and rayon or a third of a cup (78 ml) of white vinegar for silk. Avoid pouring directly onto fabric.
