That said, I'm glad the book not only ended on a happy note but didn't go into the royal shenanigans and issues the Queen faced during her long reign. She learns it is a full-time job with constant demands on her time and attention. No wonder she enjoyed the company of dogs and horses! At just 26 years old, when her beloved father dies, Elizabeth becomes Queen of the UK on June 2, 1953. I learned previously she had volunteered for the British Army as a Driver and Mechanic. At 21, she married Prince Phillip and saved Ration Coupons for the fabric for her Wedding Dress, loved animals and had 30 Corgi Dogs in all. Each dog was made a meal from the Palace Kitchen! There is no doubt that her love of country life and animals never dimmed, and one of my favourite illustrations is this one, of her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She spent her summers there every year, and it was at Balmoral that she died in early September 2022. (This was being published before her death.)

I would say she learned that lesson well, but the illustration certainly shows how many people serve the royal family. She was only ten years old. She could not have envisaged what the future would bring, but she was prepared and enabling so that many others fulfilled their own dreams through her advocacy, support and service. The story is really well done and it is a lovely little tribute, it doesn't cover the Queens passing in the book as it was written ahead of that happening. The illustrations are lovely and whilst they are not as like like as some in the series have been they are great to tell her story. As always, Vegara’s books have the best illustrations! This one kept my niece and nephew engaged and was the perfect springboard to further discussions about our new King, the succession and what it means to be a royal child.
