Description

Felling Licence Online (FLO) is the Forestry Commission’s online felling licence application and management portal. There are five levels from entry through to gold, as your score improves, you will move through these levels and eventually become Grown in Britain (GiB) audit ready. Designated areas or features should be indicated on one of the annotated maps within your plan. If a designation applies, please provide details. Magic Map How you divide your compartment(s) into smaller, more manageable sub-compartments may vary depending on the forest size, location, and plan. How you design your sub-compartment layout is entirely up to you, however using ‘hard’ features (for example a river boundary, a Public Right of Way, or an existing access road), may act as natural breaks in your overall compartment making management easier. Please note, for smaller forests (or creation areas) you may only require a single compartment. In providing three different file formats for exporting, we have created a versatile tool, which can function with other programs. Based upon where you intend to use the file would influence the format you might export it as. Another key difference is that GeoJSON and KML both export as a single file, whereas Shapefiles are several files which you have to zip.

myForest is the flagship project of Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity providing innovative solutions to some of the greatest environmental challenges to modern society. Firstly, the Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology that uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyse hurdles (such as slope, access, and proximity to markets) to the active management of woodlands. The methodology uses the Forestry Commission’s Managed Woodland Headline Performance Indicator dataset to identify unmanaged woodlands. Here we take a look at two of those projects in more detail. These studies were written by collaborators on the projects. HomeGrownHouse - Grown in Britain

When creating either a forest creation or management plan it is vital to outline the Forest Management Unit (FMU). The FMU is the area subject to a forest management plan or proposal. This area is selected by the owner and/or manager and will be determined by the nature of the forest, the proposed operations and both creation and management objectives. Extensive FMUs have the advantage of allowing a strategic approach to be taken in achieving UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) Requirements, both in terms of the area covered and the timescale. Throughout this project, the team has engaged with the Forestry Commission and other community forest organisations to ensure that the project outcomes are as practical and relevant as possible to bring the greatest amount of unmanaged woodland into management in the North East and Wider Yorkshire Area. If you choose to appoint an agent to develop your woodland management plan you must sign a form to give an agent authority to act for you when dealing with the Forestry Commission. You can submit this Forestry Commission agent authority form as part of your application for funding.

Each question is matched to ecosystem services (e.g. carbon storage, habitat provision, flood alleviation, products and other public benefits) that each of the specified management actions are deemed to enhance. Some grant schemes ask land managers to have an approved management plan in place prior to making an application. You can find the tool in the myForest Platform, a focused GIS software allowing woodland owners and managers to map, plan, and manage their woodlands. myForest • home (sylva.org.uk) Screenshot of the myForest Woodland Assessor The standard forestry convention dictates that compartments should be provided with a number (you may also include a compartment name), and sub-compartments should be provided with a letter (you may also include a sub-compartment name). Through this systematic approach, when producing maps or plans which are submitted to any stakeholder, the compartments, sub-compartments, and any plans associated with that area are clear and easy to understand.

myForest for Education: the UK’s first woodland management planning application designed specifically for education. Depending on the reason for exporting your compartments, sub-compartments, and features, we may recommend a specific file format and projection type: Export Use Working across the wider Northeast and Yorkshire area, Northwoods currently hosts the Northwoods Innovation Programme funded by the Forestry Commission through the Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds (WiMFIF), part of the UK Government's Nature for Climate Fund. The Northwoods Innovation Programme has been established to accelerate innovative approaches and technology which improve the number and quality of woodlands in active management. As part of the Innovation Programme, Northwoods organises and hosts a wide range of events, including webinars and in person demonstration events, that communicate innovative ideas and tools to stakeholders that own or are involved in the management of woodlands.Forest Lab uses the latest online technology to advance knowledge exchange between woodland managers and scientists. It is hoped that the sharing of data collected by volunteer ‘stewardship scientists’ will promote woodland resilience. A Forest Owner Account - for those who own or manage a single property which contains forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation); or Sub-compartments are individual creation and / or management areas outlined within the wider compartment and FMU. The myForest Assessor is a woodland condition self-assessment tool . Analysing your woodland stewardship methodically is a great way to improve your management practices in accordance with the UKFS. The Assessor will provide you with a detailed report and certificate based on the answers you provide to 30 questions.

myForest offers data layers which cover Great Britain, as well as offering layers specific to England, Scotland, and Wales. These layers vary in uses from those which may be specific to forest creation or management, to generic layers useful in all cases. If you are writing a woodland management plan with grant funding then you need to have your grant agreement in place before you start work on your plan.In designing and building myForest for Education, we consulted closely with more than 100 Forest School Leaders, environmental educators and teachers who participated in early trials and contributed ideas.’ (Sylva Foundation) Finally, further support and advice is provided to woodland owners by helping them evaluate their woodland against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) using the myForest Woodland Assessor developed by the Sylva Foundation with the aim to produce a UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) compliant Woodland Management Plan. Taking part in Forest Lab requires you to have an account on the myForest platform. An Engagement Agreement sets out our joint commitments in working with you, and also what we expect from you in return. We hope this provides clarity and detail on important aspects, including commitments on your time, any legal considerations, and any specific responsibilities.
