Against my better judgement I have started a new crowdfunding campaign. I have been offered treatment with the immunotherapy drugs I had before at my local hospital and have jumped at the chance. It could keep me alive and well for another year or so.
It came out of the blue really. Unbeknown to me, my current oncologist had started pressuring the Hospital to provide me with treatment as they had submitted and supported both my Individual Funding Requests (IFR). This left them in the awkward position of saying I needed the treatment but refusing to give me it even if I funded it myself. They agreed to treat me!
But the cost of the drugs is going to be around £20,000. Now I had just had an offer from a private doctor in the UK to treat me at a hospital down south (things are changing, I couldn’t find anyone who would do this in 2016) but I’d have to pay for everything including the treatment facilities. The cost was in the region of £50,000. So my local hospital’s offer is very welcome.
But I’ve already spent about £170,000 of our money funding treatment, I can’t sustain this, I am not Bill Gates.
We have a legal challenge against NHS England over the second of 2 funding refusals by the IFR Screening Group. A letter before action managed to get the IFR past the Screening Group to a National IFR Panel but they duly refused again on 6 Mar. So the legal challenge continues, and that is another drain on our funds.
But all money raised will go on my treatment, I doubt this is the last course I will need.
I’m using a really good solicitor in London together with a barrister that we contacted separately but turns out to regularly work with the solicitor. They have challenged IFR refusals successfully in the past and think I have an excellent case, so I have faith in them but this doesn’t come cheap. The cost will be worth it if it gets NHS England to fund my case and if that happens I should get most of our money back.
So the money raised will go towards my treatment. To date we have raised over half the cost of the first treatment which is fantastic.
You can also help without paying me, click on any of the advert links here and around the site if you are going to buy anything from those places online. It will cost you nothing but I will receive a small commission.
You can also send me money directly to my PayPal account using this link You can change the amount to send anything.
If you donated to my last fundraiser, I don’t want you to donate to this one (though many have already). A few shares on Facebook and/or Tweets accompanied by messages encouraging people to contribute would be great. I prefer money from strangers 🙂
I closed my previous funding campaign down in July 2018. it was never going to raise the amount of money I needed to go back to the Hallwang Clinic in Germany and and almost a year after treatment at Southampton they had failed to send me a bill.
I was also really embarrassed at receiving money from Family and friends, particularly my old Army mates. I am pretty independent, I like to feel I have done reasonably well in life after a difficult start, yet I felt like a failure. I was asking for money, I couldn’t fund my own medical bills. Its just me.
Don’t get me wrong I really appreciated the support and I raised around £20,000 from the campaign and various fundraising events which helped us enormously covering flight, other travel costs, accommodation and food whilst were heading to Germany every 3 weeks and also Southampton every 3 weeks at the end of the year.
In September 2018 Southampton sent me a bill for £22,000, I rang them up to ask why it had taken a year to raise it and considering the way it all ended (they lost interest, promised me a lot of things and then didn’t deliver on any of it) I wasn’t that keen to pay them. A week later they wrote to me apologising for sending me an invoice. I suspect a paperwork cock up but I don’t need to know the details thanks 🙂
