One thing to note however, as a buying consideration, the trousers are not designed for high output activities as they’re not especially breathable. They will keep you dry but for higher performance, you’ll need a bigger budget. Though it's described as helmet-compatible, I'd say the hood is too small to be a really successful match. While you can pull it over a helmet, comfort and mobility both become compromised when you then fully fasten the zip; head movement is restricted looking up or side to side, and the collar pulls too tight across the mouth and chin. Drop your zip below chin level and it's all freed - but of course you're not then fully sealed against the elements. I've used the hood with a helmet when winter mountaineering, so I'd concede it will just about do for an occasional such day, but if you're regularly climbing in the Pac Plus XT I suspect it'd get annoying. Rohan’s Ventus waterproof overtrousers are an excellent performer for outdoor rainy days with a number of decent design cues from the top to the bottom. In particular, we were impressed with the full length two-way waterproof zips on the side of each leg. These are excellent quality and allow the leg of the trousers to be opened up from the ground up – easy to then slip your walking boots through on a rainy day!

Answer Two is to go for some walking/outdoor trousers which are waterproof from the off. The advantage here is that you don’t have to faff around standing comically on one leg while you try to thread overtrousers over your walking boots without ripping them. The disadvantage is that genuinely waterproof walking trousers can be heavy and cloying against the skin because they are often not as breathable as the overtrousers option. RET (Resistance to Evaporative Heat Transfer) tells you theresistance a material has to water vapour passing through it. The lower the RET value, the less its resistance to moisture transfer and therefore the higher its breathability. By the definition of this standard, an RET of 0-6 is 'extremely breathable' (comfortable worn at a higher activity rate); 6-13 is 'very breathable' (comfy at a moderate activity rate); 13-20 is 'satisfactory' or 'breathable' (uncomfortable at a high activity rate); and anything over 20 is going to boil you in the bag (I paraphrase). To keep gear as light as possible most superfluous extras are stripped out, but with the Minimums, the cut is slim, with articulated knees for a great range of motion, the waist has elastic and drawcord and the zips run 1/4 -length up the leg. You may need to take your trousers off to pull them on without snagging, but this will prevent them getting filthy on the inside. The Gore-Tex is laminated to an abrasion-resistant outer face textile, thereby providing durable and robust protection. The inner surface is coated with an abrasion-resistant treatment, which improves the garments durability and reliability. Gore-Tex has engineered this material to be used for hiking, trekking, and mountaineering.

We’re really pleased to have scored Berghaus Mens Paclite Pants so highly, givimg it 8.8 out of 10, making it well above the average for all waterproof trousers.

We gave the Berghaus Paclites a pretty thorough going over in terms of water. Both my wife Alison and I donned a pair and our daughter Loz took great delight at spraying water at us with a hosepipe. The trouble is she couldn’t get us wet! The water was simply beading off the Berghaus trousers and at the end of the exercise they looked completely dry – impressive! Waterproof overtrousers are often baggy by necessity. Some manufacturers offer articulated knee joints, Velcro calf adjustment, ankle cuff press studs, waist drawstrings, and varying leg lengths to help combat waterproof trouser looseness. Waistband Thanks to Gore-Tex’s years of innovation and experience, its waterproofing materials and membranes have never been lighter, more durable, or more waterproof. To help you find the best solution, we’ve rounded up the best Gore-Tex waterproof trousers available. Legs zips allow the bottom portion of the waterproof trouser to be opened up to allow them to be put on without the need to remove boots. The longer the zips, the better, however, these openings do provide space for rain to leak through. Water-resistant zips can prevent this to a degree, as can external flaps. Ventilation For basic overtrousers, the key to reliable performance is having taped seams to ensure better waterproofing. The ability to unzip the leg is also a must for pulling them over walking boots, but remember, the zips need to be waterproof or very well protected to avoid leaks in prolonged heavy rain.I was also impressed with the durability of the trousers, and would not be worried when traipsing through tough terrain. It would have been nice to have seen higher leg zips that opened both ways, as I really miss this venting when it’s not present. We reserve the right to choose an alternative courier at dispatch in circumstances where your chosen courier is unlikely to achieve their expected delivery promise. The downside to buying online is that you can’t actually get hold of the product to try it out first.

Both negate the use of an inner lining material, and both are light and waterproof, so we’ve taken a look at the real difference. Gore-Tex Paclite Some people claim that the Paclite material is less resistant to abrasion (it doesn’t have the internal netting layer of Gore-Tex Professional). We have not seen any evidence of this at all and would not let this put you off buying any Paclite garment. This is especially the case for overtrousers because by their very nature they will not be used on every walk, and even when they are used, it is not likely to be for the whole time – they are there for protection against the elements when required. Another factor that can be a great indication of product quality is the brand. Brands like Berghaus are of course extremely well known, especially for waterproof trousers. To give that price some context we then looked at all of the products available from Cotswold Outdoor in the waterproof trousers category. We found 31 items in total. What’s the price of waterproof trousers? Keela was founded on the East Coast of Scotland, where they understand a thing or two about bad weather, and with the Rainlife 5000 trousers, they’ve made a practical, comfortable and protective pant for an excellent price. Berghaus' Paclite Gore-Tex Waterproof Overtrousers provide very high levels of waterproof protection. The 3/4 length zips can be opened for venting when in use, you can open them up all the way down the pants and use the press stud at the ankle and halfway up to keep your legs still protected but very vented. The pants use a water resistant zipper and a storm flap over the top of that, if you're battening down the hatches in these overtrousers there won't be any ingress of water through the zip, that's for sure. In a line: The Sprayway Mountain Rainpant is a great all-rounder at a respectable price. 8/10 Paramo Velez Adventure Trousers

The Nano Pro Eco material has a ‘dry-touch’ outer layer which makes it soft to handle and not too noisy or ‘rustly’. I hate it when overtrousers make too much noise, and the Marmots were pretty quiet in that regard when walking. There is also no netting layer inside them which is much my preferred design option as it stops your boots getting caught up when putting them on. Its 2.5 layer construction laminates a tough outer fabric onto the Gore-Tex membrane. Instead of using a third layer under that (as per 3L Gore Pro, for instance) the membrane is given a protective inner coating, which constitutes the nominal half layer. For Paclite Plus, Gore add another abrasion-resistant treatment that's designed to boost the fabric's durability. In practise this means it should be tougher than plain Paclite, though not as burly as Pro.Price – as you’d expect the price of a product can be an instantly recognisable factor on what sort of quality you can expect. Whoever came up with the phrase “you get what you pay for” pretty much hit the nail on the head. Whilst it’s not always the case and there are many bargains to be had, you can as a general rule, expect the higher priced products to offer better quality than a the cheapest option. We’ll dive into the price of Berghaus Mens Paclite Pants in more detail in a moment. There are poppers at the ankles to cinch the trousers in on your boots, while there is a storm flap that covers the zips to help protect against water ingress. I found the trousers to be just right in the baggy/slim fit stakes, and the material seemed to offer a respectable amount of durability. An elastic waistband and toggle help you achieve a good, comfortable fit, and I found the range of movement to be excellent. Going green is rarely a budget option, but these super trousers have 10,000mm HH waterproofing, and the benefit of two velcro fasteners on each leg (both with reflectors) that allow you to gather in any extra material at the ankle and calf. It’s simple but super effective and makes them ideal for riding your bike in filthy weather without the risk of getting caught in your drivetrain. Key features – Waterproofing: Gore-Tex 3L, 28,000mm HH; Main material: Recycled Nylon; Weight: 435g It should be said that the waterproofing is achieved via a waxed outer coating, and you will need to take care of that layer over time to keep it fresh. We have a useful article on the waterproofing process and products to use. The trousers are a blend of polyester and cotton (similar to polycotton tents) which give the best attributes of each (lightness vs breathability and tactile feel). In Use
